Aug. 10--Miami's bid to host future World Cup matches got a major boost Monday as glitterati from the political, athletic and cultural arenas teamed up to form an exploratory committee with the goal of bringing games to South Florida.

Chaired by Miami-Dade commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz, the 11-person board will try to persuade the USA Bid Committee to include Miami's Land Shark Stadium in the United States' proposal to snare the 2018 or 2022 World Cups.

The committee already has submitted its full proposal to the USA Bid Committee, which will select the 15 to 20 cities that would host World Cup matches should the United States be awarded the competition.

It would be the second World Cup held on U.S. soil, although Miami did not host any matches when the world's most-popular tournament was last here in 1994.

"The FIFA World Cup is the premier sporting event in the world, and it is important to position Miami to be a part of the USA bid effort to host this great event," Diaz said in a statement. "We have assembled a great group of people to help us lead this effort, and I look forward to working with every one of them to do something big for our community."

Members of the committee from the sports world: Marcelo Claure, CEO of Brightstar and force behind Miami's recent MLS bid; Peruvian soccer legend Teofilo Cubillas; former Miami Heat standout Alonzo Mourning; and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross.

Also on the committee: Facundo L. Bacardi, Chairman of the Board, Bacardi Limited; Peter J. Dolora, senior vice president of American Airlines; Grammy Award-winning producer Emilio Estefan; George Feldenkreis, chairman/CEO of Perry Ellis International; Mr. William D. Talbert, president of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau; and Mike Sophia, executive director of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission.

A final decision on cities is not expected from the USA Bid Committee until December, and FIFA likely will not announce the host nations of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups until late 2010.

  4. First off I would like to say excellent blog!
I had a quick question which I'd like to ask if you don't mind.
I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I've had a difficult time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there. I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints? Kudos!

  11. Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you're using? I'm looking to start
my own blog in the near future but I'm having a hard time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something completely unique.
